چکیده

Up to one third of patients with influenza A (H1N1) virus require intensive care unit (ICU) admission because of severe pneumonia, sepsis, or acute respiratory distress syndrome or a combination of these. Still, inICU mortality rate remains excessively high despite the deployment of maximal therapeutic support, often including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation [1]. In this perspective, the recently published experimental findings of Nosaka and colleagues in Critical Care may represent an important therapeutic breakthrough [2]. These investigators show that an anti-high-mobility group box-1 (anti-HMGB-1) monoclonal antibody suppresses the H1N1-induced immuno-inflammatory response, resulting in significant attenuation of lung injury and improved survival [2]. This study underscores that pharmacological inhibition of key inflammatory cytokines, despite offering

The Neurological Manifestations of H1N1 Influenza Infection; Diagnostic Challenges and Recommendations

Background: World Health Organization declared pandemic phase of human infection with novel influenza A (H1N1) in April 2009. There are very few reports about the neurological complications of H1N1 virus infection in the literature. Occasionally, these complications are severe and even fatal in some individuals. The aims of this study were to report neurological complaints and/or complications ...

Anti-high mobility group box-1 monoclonal antibody treatment provides protection against influenza A virus (H1N1)-induced pneumonia in mice

INTRODUCTION Provision for the emergence of an influenza pandemic is an urgent issue. The discovery of a novel anti-influenza therapeutic approach would increase the effectiveness of traditional virus-based strategies. This study was undertaken to evaluate the therapeutic effects of anti-high mobility group box-1 (HMGB1) monoclonal antibody (mAb) treatment on influenza A virus (H1N1)-induced pn...

Antigenic Variation of the Haemagglutinin Gene of the Influenza A (H1N1) pdm09 Virus Circulating in Shiraz, February-April 2013

Background: A new pandemic influenza A (H1N1) emerged in April 2009, causing considerable morbidity and mortality. Since mutations in the haemagglutinin (HA) may influence the antigenicity and pathogenicity of the virus, continued epidemiological and molecular characterization for the effective control of pandemic flu and developing of more appropriate vaccine is crucial. Objective: To monitor ...

High Titers of Hemagglutination Inhibition Antibodies against 2009 H1N1 Influenza Virus in Southern Iran

Background: Pandemic flu had at least two waves in Iran. Knowing how many of the general population were already exposed to this infection has a major impact on na-tional preventive measures. As of December 30, 2009, a total of 3672 confirmed cases of human infection with a novel Influenza A (2009 H1N1) virus had been reported in Iran with 140 deaths. Objective: In this study we aim to measure,...
